This intensive "Empirical Approaches to Democracy" course with lectures and seminar work aims to familiarize students with the most critical topics in empirical democracy research. Lectures will provide an overview of the topics and introduce international debates. Interactive sessions will focus on critical discussion of cutting-edge research and identify current debates and open research questions.

Topics covered include the following:

1. citizen perceptions of democracy,
2. direct democracy,
3. governance and democracy,
4. deliberative democracy and democratic innovations, (5) representation beyond democracy.
