Mahmoud will be spending one year, starting October 2021, as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Political Sociology Research Area, University of Zurich. Mahmoud completed his PhD in political science at the Berlin Graduate School of Social Sciences, Humboldt University of Berlin on July 2021. Previously, he studied at the American University in Cairo and the University of Duisburg-Essen. During his stay at the University of Zurich, which is funded by the DAAD PRIME postdoctoral fellowship, Mahmoud will work on a research project to examine the structural and institutional determinants of power sharing and their effects on democratic stability using a set-theoretic mixed-methods design by combining QCA and process tracing. His research interests include democratization and authoritarianism, civil society and accountability, and Middle Eastern politics. In addition to his academic work, Mahmoud has, for over a decade, worked with and consulted for civil society organizations in the Arab worl d and Europe on issues related to democracy promotion and good governance, most recently with the Transparency International Secretariat in Berlin.
