Hiring / Doktorierende (PhD Candidates)

PhD candidates are employed in qualification positions with a Rahmenpflichtenheft. The source of funding for a doctoral position is mainly third-party funding.

The main part of the working time is the preparation of the doctoral thesis, in accordance with the framework specifications of the respective faculty. A higher level of employment can be chosen for additional tasks relevant to the qualification.

Pay rates for PhD Candidates are based on the standads set by SNSF (even with another source of financing). 

Pay rates (monthly pay x 12), as of 01.01.2024:

  1. Year CHF 49'854.85 
  2. Year CHF 51'444.65 
  3. Year CHF 53'034.40 and following

New from 1 January 2024: The rates apply to an employment level of 80%.

PhD candidate employment can also be up to 100% with a correspondingly higher salary, but not less than 80%. The annual change of doctoral student takes place exclusively on the 1st of the month of entry (also for entries during the month). 

General:

  • Temporary employment
    • 3 years as a norm
    • extension possible by 1 year at a time up to a total of 6 years (§ 15 para. 1 PVO-UZH)
      • The years as a doctoral student and assistant are added together, regardless of the source of funding
  • Purpose of employment: doctorate (§ 10 c para. 2 UniO), enrolment mandatory

As soon as the doctoral certificate has been issued and the employment continues, a change of function to postdoctoral researcher (new guideline position) is mandatory.
